mangrove

Mangroves are trees and shrubs that grow happily in the tropical and subtropical coastal areas. Unlike their regular counterparts, they grow on the mud flats of estuaries and marine shorelines. Thanks to their criss-crossy root system and the slimy mud, that fish and other organisms find it an ideal home.

Today there are about 110 species that are considered “mangroves”. And you can find many of them in our habitat. Besides the swimming type, we also have the crawlers in the mix. So look closely at the muddy bottom, there are crabs in the hiding.

  • mud crab

I am the Mud Crab – Scylla Serrata, as I am famously known. I am hardy and I can survive almost all water conditions. I mean all. My shell colour vary from a deep, mottled green to very dark brown. So look a little closely when you try to spot me on the muddy bottom.

    my diet

Sorry to say this but I can be really hungry and get viscous. The hard-shelled ones among us can attack and devour the soft-shelled moulting crabs. We are opportunistic cannibals. That apart, I can also eat any edible sinking pellet.

    where i'm from

We can be found from South Africa to the Malay Archipelago, from southern Japan to south-eastern Australia, and as far east as Fiji and Samoa. But the natural range of Scylla Serrata is in the Indo-Pacific.
